Techniques and gestures are a starting point.
Repeat a gesture, a technique often old, whilst bringing
complementary modifications that follow the evolution
of needs, all this constitutes the skills of the
men in this territory..
Cabinet making is a well known local skill: the
construction of wine growers tables. Some call them
"lyre tables ", in relation to their shape. others call
them "wine growers tables ", in relation to the
means of storage. Although everyone agrees that the
technique used for their manufacture hasn't varied
in decades.
Plans of this type of furniture were discovered
during an ethnographic survey, undertaken in the middle
of the C20th, that looked at the traditional furniture
used in the valley of the Aube during the first half
of the last century. Anxious not to lose on the
one hand ,the techniques, and on the other hand, objects
from its territory, the Intercommunal Organization
of the Forêt d'Orient Regional Nature Park solicited
the help of several cabinetmakers in 1981 to create
a new dynamic of production for this type of
furniture.
To guarantee the quality of the finished products
, the cabinetmakers signed a convention with the Park,
and since then every object drawn from the survey, and
conceived traditionally, benefits from the image
of the Park through the certificate of conformity
delivered by the Park. The most important sign for the
purchasers is the logo of the Park, situated
on the underside of the table. Each of these tables
is made to order.
Today, only one craftsman continues to work with
the Park .
His output represents today:
- a set of 4 round tables, from 50 cm in diameter
to 1.20m in diameter,
- a set of 4 oval tables, from 60cm in diameter,
to 1.30m in diameter.
