The Forêt d'Orient Regional Nature Park

In
the East, in the Aube, in the Orient... on the border
of the Paris Basin, in the south of Champagne - Ardennes,
lies a vast mysterious land where water, earth and trees
gave birth to a remarkable territory, fruit of nature
and men.
It is here, twenty five kilometres to the East of Troyes,
that in 1970 was created, one of the first five
French Regional Nature Parks, covering 70.000 hectares
(50 communes and today more than 20.000 inhabitants
) sheltering in their heart immense reservoirs (5.000
ha), which are nestled deep within huge forests, bordered
to the east and west, by undulating chalk hills. |

In
the heart of the Park, three large lakes, with a surface
area of 5000 ha which give great pleasure
to fans of water sports and swimming.

These
magnificent stretches of water are also, at the time of
the large migrations, a favoured halt for thousands of
birds: cranes, ducks, wild geese,
birds of prey...
In the last 20 years, almost 260 species
have frequented the territory of the lakes. The regular
passage, of rare species such as the black stork or the
osprey , show the complementary relation of the site.
Thus, the eagle will go to spend its nights in forest,
whilst the geese go to graze beyond the lake during the
day... |
